Hey everyone, this is my inaugural post. Welcome to the world of fun (and delicious) fruit growing. Today’s post is about my favorite mini fruit delights……alpine strawberries! Alpine strawberries are flourishing this time of year here in So. Cal. My header picture shows the little white gems. Yes, there are white strawberries, and when ripe, they have a certain pineapple-y tropical flavor. I also grow red alpines too, which essentially are the more familiar strawberry (that we know and love) in miniature. (-with small differences like softer flesh and more intense flavor.)
Alpine strawberries originated in the European Alps, hence the name. These tasty little nuggets were cross bred with the larger, white colored Chilean strawberry to make the hybrid that we know as the modern strawberry.
Check out the pictures of my home made hanging strawberry pots below. Hanging pots work the best for strawberries as they keep the fruit off the ground and away from the ugly slugglies (and other unwanted pests). Check back later for how-to directions for the hanging pots…
